Life's Rich Pageant

I found this at the Choderhead Bazoo blog today, recommended.

If you say you haven't seen one of this specimens, you're either a liar or one one yourself...

She's sweet, she's sassy - she's swassy! Dripping with inexplicable attitude, this spectacular specimen can be found trolling the fashionable mega-stores and corporate storefront money-vacuums with a delightful disdain for her less fashionable inferiors - namely everyone. Usually observed in pairs or mini-packs, our accessory-laden subject offers a study in contrasts; despite her perky attire, her demeanor suggests that of ordeal and over-stimulation. Could it be that she aspires to the very same high-maintenance lifestyle of the trash-magazine celebrities she emulates so enthusiastically? Or are her and her army of lookalikes simply spoiled empty-headed twits with dangerously indulgent parents? You be the judge.

Nickles for Tooths

I've been reading the book "Rant", written by Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club, Choke, etc.).
The whole book its a compilation of interviews with several people who knew the main character.
I haven't finished the book yet, but i found a article by a character rather interesting.
I speaks about some child myths, like the tooth fairy.
I'll write it down...

From the Field Notes of Green Taylor Simms (Historian):
In Africa, people don't believe in the Tooth Fairy. Instead, they have the Tooth Mouse. In Spain: Ratoncito Perez. In France: La Bonne Petite Souris. A tiny, magical rodent that steals teeth and replaces them with spare change.
In some cultures, the lost tooth must be hidden must be hidden in a snake or rat burrow to prevent a witch from finding and using the tooth.
In other cultures, children throw the tooth into a roaring fire, then later, dig for coins in the cold ashes.
By first believing in Santa Claus, then the Easter Bunny, then the Tooth Fairy, Rant Casey was recognizing that those myths are more than pretty stories and tradition to delight children.
Or to modify behavior. Each of those traditions ask the child to believe in the impossible in exchange for a reward. These are stepped-up tests to build a child's faith and imagination. The first test is to believe in a magical person, with toys as a reward. The second test is to trust a magical animal, with candy as the reward. The last test is the most difficult, with the most abstract reward: To believe, trust in a flying fairy that will leave money.
From a man, to an animal to a fairy.
From toys to candy to money. Thus, interestingly enough, transferring the magic of faith and trust from sparkling fairydom to clumsy, tarnished coins. From gossamer wings to nickels...domes...and quarters.
In this way, a child is stepped up to a greater feats of imagination and faith as he or she matures. Beginning with Santa in infancy, and ending with the Tooth Fairy as the child acquires adult teeth. Or, plainly put, beginning with all the possibility of childhood, and ending with an absoulute trust in the national currency.

Silly Rabbit, Trix are for Kids!

Another proof of the sadistic nature of children and corporate overlords.

Through my childhood, spent mostly in front of a tv set waiting for cartoons, i had the opportunity to watch how low can someone go to fill one of our most essential needs, eating.
I saw a tale of failure, sorrow, hunger and violence.

Im talking about the Trix commercials.

It is quite easy to assume the rabbit its a sexual predator, always following children asking for a taste...
But, if we see commercials carefully, we can clearly see hes just very very hungry.
Just look at him, paled face, skinny body etc.

The plot in the commercials its the following: Kids eating cereal, Trix appears and creates an incredibly complicated and mediocre plan to snatch away the cereal, the rabbit fails, and then the kids say "Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids!", rabbit leaves with the anguish of defeat still pumping in his avenging heart.

Don't judge him, perhaps he felt entitled to get a bowl because the cereal has his fucking name on it!

In 1976, there was a promotion wherein children had to vote whether or not Trix Rabbit should get to eat some of his own cereal. 99% voted so the poor son of a bitch could have some. Apparently, all the kids were ashamed the rabbit had been reduced to begging.
And yes, he had his moment now lost in the archives of television, and after that General Mills returned to his usual methods of oppression.

I'm still hopeful that he'll get his revenge someday...

Colors, Clowns and Cruelty

Now for something a little more serious.
Each year, groups of people come to town with a message of violence and slavery disguised in ridiculous costumes (no, im not talking about the coming of the Pope).

Circuses.

Those places children love, with their clowns, acrobats, magicians and animals.
But theres a dark side in circuses.

Everyone its aware that each living creature roaming this world has the basic right to live their lives freely and in harmony with their own nature. Circuses deny this right to animals.

It is unnatural for an animal to act in a way he isn't used to. Circuses robs them from their natural dignity.
Monkeys doing stuns and acts representing vulgar jokes worthy of a lowly clown.
Lions and tigers stripped completely from their dignity as they are forced act as docile kittens.
Mighty elephants, majestic and intelligent in nature, but forced by their trainers to wear feathers and walk on their hind legs.
And of course, the animals wont learn this tricks on their own.
Whips, electroshocks, collars, sticks and other instruments are implemented to "discipline" them; trainers learn from their mentors that fear is the tool to impose dominance.

Because of the tight schedules, circus animals are forced to remain in small cages for 20 hours daily. This restrains them from all their natural needs, tigers aren't able to hunt or run, elephants aren't able of take a mud bath, etc.

Most of the animals, due to the physical and psychological stress, they wont last more than half of the life they should live.

All this in the name of our "Entertainment".

This animals deserve their rightful liberty. They never choose to act in this vulgar places.

Don't support this acts of abuse and tyranny.

Thank you, single-member-of-the-audience, i hope this can open up a few eyes.

Cryogenetics has nothing on Giant Blocks of Glass

A 104 year old patent entitled "Method of Preserving the Dead" has been recently discovered.
It consists basically in encasing the human body and the severed head in big blocks of glass.

Now days we hear this and we think its ridiculous. Obviously the body needs oxygen to get preserved, but even if some of the tissue still has water it would break down at some point.
And all the rotting tissue would get stuck in the bottom of the cavity and it would give us the looks of a good old' zombie.

I would make an awesome decoration for the living room though.

Major Blackout

Saw this recently in some pages. I really like the idea.

On august the 10th at 19:55 to 20:00 hrs, people are proposing to turn off all lights posible to give our planet, our home, just a 5 minute brake from all the energy consuming that goes around. This proposal comes from france, but imagine the masive energy save that we can cause if this goes world wide.

Please, its only for 5 minutes.

Apagón mundial: El 10 de AGOSTO de 19:55 a 20:00 Hrs. se propone apagar todas las luces para darle un respiro al planeta. la propuesta proviene de Francia. si la respuesta es masiva, el ahorro energético puede ser brutal.

Solo 5 minutos.
Porfavor solo 5 minutos.

The Sons of Korhal are back!

I have to admit im a HUGE Starcraft fan, and i've been playing for years (not continuously).

Some months ago i found a reason to pledge to Global Warming to wait just one more year before he comes riding with his horsemen and kill us all with floods, extreme heat and swarms of polar bears escaping from the north pole.

Im talking about Starcraft II. And today i saw the real time gameplay video introducing the new bad ass Terran units.

Im a Terran Fanboy, i got all exited by watching a Battlecruiser taking out loads of Marines in seconds with the new Plasma Torpedo weapon.
The new features in the buildings are really interesting; the big gun in the command center, interchangeable add-ons, the radar, submergeable supply depots, etc.
But of course the reason everyone in the Blizzcon was cheering was the new units.

Jumping kickass Reapers, transformer-ish Vikings, good ol' Marines, Cloaking bombing Banshees, and last but not least, the mighty Thor.
Blizzard finally gave the Ghosts a decent primary attack weapon.

I didn't saw like the ultimate terran weapon in this video (like the Protoss Mothership), but im eagerly waiting for it.

Im scared of the new Zerg units...

I foresee unbalanced units as hell.

Hoverboards, anyone?

I was looking at some news today and i saw something that made me rejoice and remember my wildest childhood dreams.

Apparently, some scientists claim that they have figured out how to reverse what's known as the Casimir force, whats the Casimir force you may ask?, our good pal Wikipedia answers:

"Is a physical force exerted between separate objects due to resonance of all-pervasive energy fields in the intervening space between the objects. This is sometimes described in terms of virtual particles interacting with the objects, due to the mathematical form of one possible way of calculating the strength of the effect."

So this means that this scientists have discovered a way to reverse such force causing that objects may repel each other rather than be attracted to each other.

And this lead us to the conclusion that hoverboards, hovercars and many more nice gadgets may be well under way.

Cant wait!

A Graveyard with not a Tombstone standing.

Through history, humans have achieved great deeds in science, arts, etc., we have overcome our own demons and conquered obstacles that seemed unreachable, but, as our curious and greedy nature, sometimes we just don't know when to stop or we don't care who are we affecting with our decisions.

We have tapped into the power of manipulating the enormous potential of highly radioactive materials and used it as we please; unfortunately human ignorance and desperation can leads into committing horrible deeds. 62 years ago, as Albert Camus said: "Mechanized civilization has just reached the ultimate stage of barbarism" , we saw the dawn of the so called "Nuclear Age", and we saw the power of the catalyst of our time.

It all began in the final stages of WWII; months after the US declared war upon Japan in retaliation for the attack over Pearl Harbor, and even before that the Manhattan Project was underway. Harry S. Truman was unaware of the project until Franklin Roosevelt's death. The Manhattan Project, was a combined effort of the US, Canada and the UK to built the first atomic weapon. European refugee scientists and American scientists feared that Nazi Germany would develop such a project as well, and so they began to build the bomb. Those where the first signs of deterrence (a country's fear of the others power) that would subjugate the superpowers later.
The first nuclear device, called "Gadget", was detonated during the test "Trinity" near Almogordo, New Mexico on July 16, 1945. The Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs were the second and third to be detonated and as of 2007 the only ones ever detonated in a military action. Finally, Truman decided to drop the bomb. The Target Committee of Los Alamos, recommended Kyoto, Hiroshima, Yokohama and Kokura as possible targets. The committee rejected the idea of attacking strictly military targets, for them it was really important the psychological factor of inducing fear in the citizens; this would later be proof of the cynical and inhuman way the attack was planed. On July 26, Truman and other allied leaders issued The Potsdam Declaration outlining terms of surrender for Japan:
"...The might that now converges on Japan is immeasurably greater than that which, when applied to the resisting Nazis, necessarily laid waste to the lands, the industry and the method of life of the whole German people. The full application of our military power, backed by our resolve, will mean the inevitable and complete destruction of the Japanese armed forces and just as inevitably the utter devastation of the Japanese homeland..."
On August 6 of 1945, the B-29 Enola Gay (named after the bomber commander's mother), was launched from North Field Airbase on Tinian in the West Pacific; Enola Gay was accompanied by two other B-29's, The Great Artiste and a nameless aircraft latter named Necessary Evil.

The bomb was released over Hiroshima at 08:15 (Hiroshima time), the bomb named Little Boy (gun type fission weapon) took 57 seconds to land on target. It created a blast equivalent to about 13 kilotons of TNT; the radius of the explosion was about 1.6 km (1 mile).
90% of the buildings in the radius where seriously damaged or completely destroyed.
An estimated minimum of 90,000 people died withing two months. Around 800 to 1000 civilians lived on and they where named Hibakusha or Explotion-affected people.
Tokyo's first knowledge of what had really caused the disaster came from the White House public announcement in Washington, D.C., sixteen hours after the nuclear attack on Hiroshima.

Newspapers of the US where describing what Radio Tokyo said: "Practically all living things, human and animal, were literally seared to death".
By December of the same year thousands dies from injuries and some by radiation poisoning raiding the death toll to 140,000.

From then on, many survivors of people exposed to the heavy radiation have died.

Some of the pro-bombing arguments go from the fact that Japan chose not to surrender, it was preferable and less expensive than invasion and a speedy way to end the war.

But still, these doesn't justify the slaughter and the psychological damage of feeling the power of a weapon beyond anyones wildest dreams.
Many scientists including Albert Einstein and Leo Szilard, were openly against this weapon. They were really aware of no just the harm it would bring dropping it, but the consequences in years after.
The same existence of nuclear weapons would bring the world into a crazy arms race between the super powers of the world.
Now days we are paying the price of such an arms race. Theres no room left for the thousands of warheads stored in silos and the conventional methods of disarming the warheads are really slow and theres no room either for the highly dangerous leftovers.
The Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall was one of the really few buildings still standing that were nearer to ground zero. The ruin was named Hiroshima Peace Memorial and made a UNESCO World Heritage site over the objections of the U.S. and China.

This events are a demonstration of the barbaric nature of humans. Humans are the only know life-form to perform such genocides against his own kind. And all this comes from loathing of each other and the greed that makes us do horrible things.
We must try at all cost to never repeat this kind of acts ever again.

Comrade Papa its about to speak!

The former Soviet Union has always being used as an example in most of the capitalists country's to show that communism doesn't work, but if we direct our attention in the small community of friendly blue skinned pygmies that we all loved in our childhood we will find that they have made an utopia that'll make Marx jump out of the grave with joy.

Yes, im talking about "The Smurfs".

Since 1976, they've been hoping around under the noses of the FCC; in times were claiming to be communist in a capitalist country was as bad as claiming to be a child raper.

So, lets take a peek at the Smurf Village to see some interesting facts:
  • Every Smurf wears similar clothes (the funny hat and those white pants except Smurfette but we'll talk about here later)
  • Everyone shares their posetion
  • None its richer or has more things than the other
  • Everyone unites to fight Gargamel (the lame arch nemesis of the village)
  • Their leader its a bearded, red-hat wearing benevolent figure
Want more proof? Lets quote Papa Smurf: “From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs” Yes, he actually said that!

Smurfette its the only female smurf in the whole village, makes you wonder, do they really share even women?; and it really makes no sence that nobody explains from where the hell did Baby Smurf came from.

This claims have been around a long time; its is possible that its just a fun coincidence, or is it?...

Worthy of a Penny Dreadful

A couple of hours ago i submitted the first entry in this blog, and hours later i've come back to start plunging utter randomness into it.

So, in one of my travels across the web i've found a really interesting urban legend that happened in the Victorian Era in England.
It was common to find in that period of time a really vast amount of myths and hoaxes going around to provoke mass hysteria.

So, in 1837 a businessman returning home late one night, he was shocked when he saw a strange figure jumping over the fence of the cemetery. Apparently he claimed that the figure looked like a muscular man with devilish features like pointy ears and nose and bright eyes.

This, of course, was not the only sighting.

Later in October, Mary Stevens was walking on Lavender Hill, and suddenly she claimed that she saw a strange figure leaping from a dark alley. He quickly immobilize her by applying a tight grip with his arms and started to kiss her face while ripping her clothes with his claws that according to Mary where "cold and clammy as those of a corpse"; the girl screamed and the attacker fled from the scene, the scream drawed the attention of neighbors but they couldn't find the attacker.
This was just the first of a series of attacks thats mostly where against young women.

The next day after the attack of Mary Stevens, there was a report of the same character leaping in front of a carriage causing the driver to loose control and crash injuring himself. Several witnesses claimed that he escaped by jumping over a nine foot high wall
while laughing.

After this weird sightings the press started to give the name of "Spring Heeled Jack" to the mysterious character.

Similar reports where handed to the police over the next months claiming the same "wicked pranks".

The best description of Spring Heeled Jack was told by Jane Alsop after being attacked.
Apparently a police officer knocked on the door of her house asking to bring a lamp because they caught outside, when she opened the door the man attacked her and started ripping her clothes until other members of her family ran to help her.
She told the police "he was wearing a kind of helmet, and a tight fitting white costume like an oilskin. His face was hideous; his eyes were like balls of fire. His hands had claws of some metallic substance, and he vomited blue and white flames."

There where more attacks after this and then the legend spread through all of England.
He became for decades a symbol of English folklore, he was used often to scare kids.
He was too the protagonist of Penny Dreadfuls, British fictional publications.

Spring Heeled Jack was never captured and there was no real evidence of his existance other than witnesses testimonials. But there where suspects.
A group of young aristocrats where accused after it was known they had an irresponsible wager.
But the main suspect was the Marquess of Waterford. The Marquess was frequently in the news in the late 1830s for drunken brawling, brutal jokes and vandalism, and was said to do anything for a bet.
A reverend accused him of being the culprit claiming the Marquess "used to amuse himself by springing on travellers unawares, to frighten them, and from time to time others have followed his silly example".

There was never a real explanation for the attacks; it is suspected that this legends is one of those story's that gets more and more exaggerated as the word is spread; people thought it was some sort of demon because there was so much ignorance in those times, but now days even with all the advances of science is one of those legends its no longer able to be resolved. But i think its a nice story and i would like to keep it just as a myth and part of english folklore.

PD. Most probably you clicked the "Back" button long ago, but if you just scrolled down and red this...Go back up and read the whole damn thing!

First Entry

So this is my first real entry after trying to make the blog look decent, im still working on a few details and i hope i looks good.
It is refreshing to start a new blog because i was just hoping from page to page trying to find a suitable place to place my thoughts and utter randomness.
Wordpress, Typepad etc.
And then i resigned and made it here.
After this rather lame introduction ill get straight to the point.
In this place ill be able to post some interesting stuff i come across in my endless journeys through the WWW (World Wide Web for the kids), currents events, news, my thoughts in things, quotes, reviews, or just mindless randomness.

(And now comes the inspirational speech of the author and the part when you start scrolling down or go back to check your comments on Myspace)

In this time and age its pretty much impossible to not be influenced by current events in the world, communication, etc.
And its important that each one of us has the right to speak up and say our opinion, even if its a stupid one its an opinion, thats the beauty of freedom of speech, that apparently many politicians and men with "power" have forgot about, banning and censoring whatever they don't see fit in a rather fascist way.
And so, im taking my right to write and say whatever the hell i want.

I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

Voltaire

That pretty much explains everything right?
